William Henry Gates III, aka Bill, a young hacker turned trillionaire, has been dubbed the ‘greatest entrepreneur of all time’, and rightly so! He is the cofounder, chairman and chief executive officer of the renowned computer & software company… Microsoft!
Starting off in high school, he met his future business partner Paul Allen and bonded over their shared love of nerdiness, computers and girls. They spent the majority of their time in the computer lab, where they learnt to hack computer systems and once just happened to stumble across the class rosters and enroll themselves into all of the classes with all the pretty girls.
He started developing software at the age of 15, and it went uphill from there. A small hiccup was being accepted into Harvard Law School at 19 (hiccup!) but nevertheless he dropped out to become an entrepreneur at the age of 20.
He remained in constant contact with Paul, and even though they weren’t prepared, together contacted the company MITS to spend a few months writing up software for a few thousand dollars. Eventually they realised they were sweet on their own, then formed a company and called it Micro-Soft.
Little did they know it would one day become the largest software business in the world (an inspiration to us personally).
Bill really did change the world through his technological innovation and inspiring business strategies; he anticipated the market’s needs to such an extent that he has been one of the richest people in the world for over 25 years. He even invented the computer mouse! Wow.
Bill continues to be a very charitable man and has given almost 28 billion USD to charity. Just last year he, along with his wife, were recognised by President Barack Obama for their philanthropic work and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
A true legend of life in my opinion.
The biggest lesson we can learn from Mr Gates would have to be to aim to change the world. Isn’t it such an inspiration that his sole aim was to do this, and he really did achieve just that?
In Microsoft there are little motivational signs scattered all over the place, which reads ‘CHANGE THE WORLD, OR GO HOME’.
His vision changed the way computers work, without him I probably wouldn’t be sitting here typing this today.
His innovative personality was the foundation of the business that 99.9% of people know about today, he stayed ahead of the game to stay in the game and then became the digital platform the game was being played on! He knew that business and technology mesh together like a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Wise words from Mr. Gates.
